"A Little Bit Avove Low Key"
Hip Hop

Stimulate your intelligence

Not for the shallow-minded, to be honest

Telepathic grenade

The title of this album is so much of an understatement that if it was understated anymore it would have no title at all. Eyenine has always been a very down to earth and focused individual from the very beginning, so this is not unexpected.

It’s not uncommon for people to sometimes downplay their best works in case it’s not good enough for whoever’s judging – in fact everyone’s doing it nowadays, and shamelessly even. Rappers are surfacing left right and center with names like Shitbag and Poopoohead, and tattoos on their faces that make Mike Tyson look like a pretty boy. That's definitely not what was happening here with the title though - guess you really shouldn't judge an album by its cover after all - silly me. But if this was an attempt to downplay the album in case it wasn’t good enough, it certainly failed - it was amazing! Nowadays people seem more excited about junk than anything else. It seems like it has become more fun than ever before to laugh at something bad than it is to appreciate something that's as close to perfect as is humanly possible, he-he-he. Think about it - if Mr. Bean ran for president against whoever your favorite politician is, wouldn't a small part of you be itching to vote for Bean?

People walk into the most expensive stores nowadays and emerge with clothes that a person from the dirtiest slums would in previous years have been ashamed to wear, and jeans so tight you may have an orgasm if you walk too fast for too long. How long will it be before fashion designers start selling deodorants, perfumes and colognes that smell like filthy sweat and body odour? Remember how you smelled when your body was going through all those embarrassing changes and no deodorant was strong enough? He-he-he. Just wait and see. Look out in your favourite stores for "B.O" pour Homme, by Kanye West obviously - and “Hoochie Coochie” for the ladies. But why even stop there? How about underwear with doodoo stains ey? Why not go all out.

But where were we? See how we drifted off? That’s the sort of casual feel you get when you first start to listen to this album, and then it takes you deeper and deeper into your mind till you start to feel like you are not alone even when no one is around you. Just take a closer look at the album cover and you’ll know that what you are about to listen to is the product of a really exciting and intelligent mind. Unlike the title suggests, it will take you on an adventure to a place so far away from your mediocre music library that the next time you open Spotify you won’t even hit the play button. This isn’t one of those “fuck you” albums dedicated to everybody who's hating; or one of those albums you listen to while you're thinking about devouring Kim Kardashian's bits or doing  whatever you kids are doing these days in the back of your Maybachs and Bentleys, and your 10 bedroom multi-million dollar mansions, and your helicopters. This is a sophisticated hip hop masterpiece that is best suited for the most pensive of moments. It’s packed with exciting skits that make it feel like a movie. After the first 3 or 4 tracks, you’ll start to feel like your brain is being permeated by intelligence. 10 tracks, 31 minutes and 5 seconds later, when you open your eyes, and realize they’d been open all along; you’ll feel like you know stuff.

Sadly none of your playlists is good enough for this album, just create a new one and name it something really smart.

Enjoy.

Dark and lovely

Don’t you just hate it when entertainment reviewers use big words and make art seem so structured and professional? As if the artist solved a bunch of complex mathematical expressions and then came up with the formula for a new masterpiece and then performed it in one take in a suit and tie while not doing more drugs than Kurt Cobain on a Monday morning after spending the whole of Sunday in church following tea with the Queen and a prior meeting with the Prime Minister? Well, you are about to hate this then. JK, we don’t know any big words; actually we do but we are allergic - they make us itch. But why all this talk about reviewers and big words then? you may ask, getting frustrated. Well, this sensational compact 8 track 2020 masterpiece was the subject of a lot of big words and in fact is still the subject of a lot of very big words today, over 12 months after its release; and it probably will be for many many years to come.

UK artist Maud the Moth has always been known for her intricate, content-heavy, conceptual and very mindful works. If your favorite artist wears a lot of pink or is Tailor Swift; is popular for twirling chewing gum while rolling her eyes backwards like she lost or forgot something; or can’t stop looking in the mirror to see if her big caboose is still there; then this album will be so complex for your ears and brain to digest that they just might explode. This is one of those albums that is not just an album but an experience. It’s one of those albums that weighs heavier than a pile of books would on the mind. It’s one of those albums you can immediately tell someone put a lot of time and effort into, and probably took years to create.

But this album is not just complex, it’s also very deep – so deep it's spooky in fact. The minute you hit the play button it’s like you stepped onto the movie set of The Omen in real life, and you are Damien Omen. Wait, that’s not even scary enough. The minute you hit the play button you’ll feel like you are in a satanic temple somewhere where no one knows, late at night, later than midnight and 4:44 AM but many hours away from 5:55; in the middle of a ritual; and you are the sacrifice. Yes! Now that’s scary – it’s that scary. So now that you know, have you got big enough kahunas to hit the play button? Really?! How big are they? Let me see. He-he-he, just kidding. Just hit the play button already will ya!

A-ya-ya-ya-Yai!!!

Where do we start?

…

Don't you hate when people downplay their best effort just in case it's not good enough? Everyone's doing it now, it's so annoying. Unfortunately we are about to do it, so start hating.

Here it goes... Nothing's ever good enough when it comes to reviewing a new Love X Stereo song or album. Each one grossly surpasses the last sonically, creatively and conceptually, as has been the case for the 9+ years spanning their illustrious independent music career, which began with the release of the critically acclaimed 4 track album "Buzzin" back in 2011 when they were a trio. To be honest it gets frustrating sometimes - writing then rewriting, then starting from scratch and repeating time and time again to no avail. To cut a long story short, this is just another sorry attempt at writing a fitting review for what can only be described as a "life changing" album, one you'll hold very close to your heart next to God and PPE; in fact don't waste your time reading it, just skip over to the play button at the end and hit it really hard so your music player knows something huge is about to happen.

Wait, that seemed like a terrible way to start. Let's start over again. See? It's happening already. Okay this one's the one. Here it goes. Eer em...

This is one of those albums that are so exciting to listen to that nothing written could ever do justice describing how amazing it is; in fact, too much hype may even make it seem like just another mainstream album with a really big PR budget, expensive soundfonts and highly targeted groove templates and arrangements designed to generate maximum streaming revenue on Spotify, and a lot of Shazam hits.

If you are not sober right now and you are reading this you are making a big mistake. This will make you feel so good that you’ll never want to stop drinking, smoking or doing whatever you do to take the edge off in these unprecedented times. But why is it so good, you may ask? After all, every album must be good in some way or the other or else the artist or band that created it wouldn’t have released it, right? That’s where you are wrong, and probably where you have been getting it wrong; maybe that’s why your music collection sucks so bad – yes, we said it. It sucks!

An album is a collection of songs put together to form a body of work that means something. The songs would either have been created together or put together with the purpose of fulfilling a theme or concept, tell a story, evoke a vibe, stimulate an emotional response, or for whatever reason its creator(s) decided at the start of the project or somewhere along the way. The extent to which an album meets the specification of any of the above criteria is what makes an album good, hence, an album can be good without even being heard – wouldn't you agree?

“Xennials” are the generation that were born at the end of the analog era and the beginning of the digital era. With that definition in mind it’s easy to figure out that Love X Stereo’s new album “Xennials” has been a long time in the making since it is the epiphany of the band’s sound – a skillful intoxicating blend of ‘90s sounds and electronic sounds of the ‘00s. The album was a good album even before it was made, maybe that’s why it is so good. With 7 tracks, each one better than the last, it will have you dancing around in space on an imaginary timeline of music somewhere between the 90’s and the 00’s. With a futuristic ambience and a heavenly feel, it's a masterfully-crafted record that will send your music collection’s self-esteem and yours too through the roof. It’s big, it’s sophisticated, groovy, purposeful, introspective, and it will make you feel like a virgin again. Okay wait, we just threw that last part in there for effects – you’ll never feel like a virgin again, you’re too old 🤣 😊, but don’t worry you’ve totally still got it (thumbs up!, wink, wink, wink).

Now, locate that play button that was mentioned earlier below and hit it harder than Snoop Dogg's 81st blunt of the day (yep, Snoop claims he smokes 81 blunts a day - he will never die).

Clean pain

Forget about how bad it was. Forget about how sad it was. Forget about all the unfortunate people who lost their lives or almost lost their lives (just for a very brief moment if you can), and all the simple pleasures and liberties of life that were taken away from every single one of us in a heartbeat... But wait, how could you? No one will be able to do so for a very long time, and even when the history books are written and those two pages – pandemic and lockdown, are stuck together by the pungent bodily fluids of all the teenage boys who should rightfully have lost their virginities and were in fact on the right track to doing so, 2020 will still be remembered as one of the most unprecedented years this century. So of course, it deserves its very own album - and it's got one.

In an era when mainstream musicians are failing to fully address social and political issues in their music, and opting to go the fantasy route and write about how good they’re living (and hence how much we and everyone else out here in the real world suck), it’s always refreshing to know that there are still artists out there who are writing real songs about real life and real people; like New Jersey, US singer songwriter Jim Gaven whose latest album “2020 Vision”, which was released on the 9th of January, is a concept album that touches on the events of 2020, including social and political issues, civil unrest, lockdown, the pandemic and everything in-between. Known for his uplifting feel-good songs about love and life, the new album skillfully combines a very bright uplifting feel and serious subject matters to create what can only be described as “blissfully somber”.

Magic

Don’t listen to this excruciatingly blissful album if you are in a vulnerable place in your life right now, it will melt you away like a chocolate fountain on a hot summer afternoon and dip strawberries inside you till you feel happier than Elton John (don't worry it won't make you gay, just really happy). This is one of those albums that swallows you whole, turns you inside out and then has you fully surrounded by its awesomeness. It is sophisticated in ways the average listener will never really be able to put a finger on. You’ll struggle to describe how crisp it is, even the noise is silky. It’s blissfully satisfying and artificial in ways that’ll make you feel like it could be intelligent and be trying to tell you something really deep. If you’ve never been to heaven, hop on-board this musical spaceship and you’ll hear things that’ll make you feel like you’re seeing things. With 8 blissfully exciting and satisfying tracks that are great whether you are getting the day started right or ending it in on a high note after being amazing all freaking day, it makes an invaluable addition to any music collection, whether you are into classical, pop or hip hop; old school or new. Released on the 29th of January, it was written during the lockdowns of 2020, and inspired by the pandemic and everything that came with it.

Dirty pain

If those words mean anything to you forget about what they mean because they are about to take on a whole new meaning. This balls-out loud album is furiously satisfying. It feels dirty AND painful. It hurts so sweet. It's so indescribably good you’ll feel so wrong after doing it – you know, like some really good drugs (Oops!! So we’ve heard. Wink, wink).

The only way you’ll be able to match the rush you'll get from this album the first time you listen to it is by jumping off a roof with your headphones on blast and listening to it (don't do it please).

It's God's answer to bigger cocks and louder music

Don’t listen to this album if you are used to the soft stuff – you know Ozzy Osbourne, KISS and all those really tough guys with fur coats softer than Beyoncé’s booty. This record is fiery in ways you’ll never be able to comprehend unless you paid the Devil a visit in hell and grabbed him by the horns (we’ve done it before, it wasn’t pretty). When you put on your headphones and listen to it even on a moderately loud level you’ll feel like the Ghost Rider racing down a dusty old road at superhigh speed with a vengeance and a skull burning ferociously for a head. If you thought the "loudness wars", which has plagued the music industry for several decades now was a problem you’ll start to see that problem in a whole new light after listening to this. To say the 11 track extravaganza of  rage is controlled chaos is an understatement, in fact calling it purposeful chaos or desirable chaos would still not do justice explaining what you are about to hear. The only thing that is advisable is that the first time you listen to it you should probably do it with a pair of worn out speakers that you are just far enough away from to not get your head blown off. Have you seen the intro of the video for that amazing Michael Jackson record “Black Or White”? Well, just like the massive sound system used there, even the first note played on this album alone is liable to send your chair rocketing through the roof and land you somewhere in Africa surrounded by, well, Africans.

You're in trouble

Following just over a week after the first single and only single from the album, “Faith”, sent shockwaves through both mainstream and underground hip hop communities far and wide, “DREVO Upload” did things no other hip hop album has done to listeners and critics for a very long time – it left them speechless, deep in thought, deeply motivated and weak at the knees, all at the same time. With only 5 tracks, it is a very compact album that packs a massive punch and it has the potential to put even the most discerning hip hop music connoisseur on their back. So before you go hitting the play button willy-nilly, think about this first – do you have a Great enough album to chase this with once you are done? If the answer is no then you are better off leaving this baby alone until your favorite rapper stops bragging about eating ass and comes out with something substantial, or it will, much like the first single “Faith”, have you feeling like there’s something missing in your life once it’s over. Of course you could always stick it on repeat and play it everyday until the resurrection of Tupac and Biggie, or until the day today’s grossly wealthy rappers get out their old bus passes and ride the bus one more time to restore the hunger and passion they once had. But of course that will never happen – you’ll never see Jay-Z riding on the bus in his pink suit and Versace hairstyle, and even if Tupac and Biggie came back they’d probably be forced to wear pink suits too to compete with the likes of Jay and Rick Ross the boss; and really short flowery shorts like Gucci Mane - that would really mess with their heads and they’d never be the same. So let’s face it, this album is trouble – but good trouble, if that makes sense.

If your favourite rapper has released an album in 2020 take caution before listening to "Trapademic" or don’t listen to it at all. This album will redefine everything you thought was good about your favourite new hip hop record and then paint a Mona Lisa over it 13 times, each one more spectacular than the last. To cut a long story short, it could make your top hip hop album sound very mediocre at best. What you are about to listen to will not only leave a lasting impression but will elevate your mindstate to levels you’ll want to achieve over and over and over, and over. Hosted by Jadakiss of the multi-platinum selling hip hop group, L.O.X, it was released on the 16th of July to critical acclaim and is poised to be a summer hit. No skip button is required for this album, on the contrary, there are several really exciting highlights that warrant the use of the rewind and repeat buttons extensively. Dangerously good

Released one song at a time starting with the sensational single, “I” on the 7th of May, 2019, California trio, The Controversy’s latest album did well to appease fans every step of the way of its unprecedented release, which spanned over 8 months in total. The full album was released to critical acclaim on the 3rd of December after every single track had received the full attention it deserved.

Co-produced by Dave Russell, whose credits include records with award-winning international music recording artists like Lady Gaga, PJ Harvey and Seal, it is one of those albums where every single record is a standalone hit single in its own right. The only way it could have been truly appreciated as exactly that is if each track was in fact released as a single, which the band cleverly did. It seemed like a pretty risky move at the time it was announced but it turned out to be one of the smartest moves the critically acclaimed Los Angeles band, whose repertoire dates as far back as 2012, could have made. In terms of highlights, well, there are none – every single record on this five-star album is a highlight. Right from the first song, “Oh Dear My”, you immediately know you are in for a monumental and phenomenal experience. The album instantaneously commands your full attention and you have no choice but to stop everything you are doing. 8 tracks and 34 minutes later, you’ll be holding your head as the title track, “World On Fire” whisks you away into outer space in ecstasy without any PPE or even your consent; almost like some really bad (or really amazing) drugs (or so we’ve heard - wink, wink).

Comprising of seasoned music industry veterans Jeff Tortora, Brian Troch and singer songwriter Jenny Franck, the band made their debut just over a year ago. Their highly anticipated self-titled album, “Elliot Waits For No One” was released on the 12th of June, just over a week ago. “The Movie” is a mind-blowing 18 track compilation album by critically acclaimed Pennsylvania, USA underground hip hop sensation, Born Ready. If you’ve spent even a second of any part of the past couple of decades complaining about the current state of hip hop, this album will have you sitting upright in your chair immediately you hit the play button. But you won’t be sitting for very long, it's packed with songs that make it almost impossible to be still, and not necessarily because you are dancing. This is one of those seriously good albums that will make you feel like you crossed over into another dimension where everything makes sense, as impossible as that may seem in these very unprecedented times we are living in. In 52 minutes and 53 seconds, the only thing you’ll be able to say is – “more”.

What just happened?

“REDS II” continues to stand the test of time as one of the most exciting Chicago underground hip hop releases this decade, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, “REDS”, which cemented its creator, Chriz J’s name in the minds of the region’s most discerning hip hop fans and took his career to the level it is at now. Chriz doesn’t release albums everyday but each one is very special and is held very close to the hearts of fans. With just 7 tracks, it’s half the size of “REDS I”, but the album somehow manages to be even more impactful. To cut a long story short, this album is going to be a big deal for you. You are about to learn (or be reminded) what a really good hip hop album sounds like.

Going to lunch... see you tomorrow

Stop everything you're doing, this isn’t one of those overhyped run-of-the-mill albums you've become so so accustomed to over the past decade, it’s a collectors’ item. It’s so good you probably won’t share it with anyone. In fact, after you've listened to it for the first time you’ll probably make multiple backup copies and hide the original somewhere no one will ever look, and retrieve it only for the most special occasions. If you are not familiar with the utterly complex and excruciatingly exciting independent California dream pop trio that is The Bilinda Butchers then head over to the menu, click on "Roster" and familiarize yourself with what you are getting yourself into before embarking on this eye-opening musical escapade, or the consequences could be dire for your music collection. Don’t worry, you won’t end up deleting all your favourite albums – just most of them.

A spectacular concept album

“Pray For Me” is the latest album by Pennsylvania underground hip hop sensation, Ez Lyrical Skitzo. It features the critically acclaimed single, “Blowing OZ”, which was released a few days before the album dropped back in November 2019. The 18 track "masterpiece", as it is being called, has hit the sweet spots of underground hip hop fans far and wide. It has received high praises locally and is spreading like wild fire across the US underground hip hop scene. If, like many hip hop fans, you have missed the long lost art form that is concept hip hop albums, and concept albums in general, this album will make you feel like a little girl skipping around in a fairy dress – there’s nothing sweet, pink or girlie about it, that’s just an analogy. Okay maybe that was a bad analogy. It will make you feel like Ozzy Ozborne right before he bit the head off that live bat on stage during that infamous concert – yes, arrrrrrghhh!! Okay no, you still don’t understand. This album will have you banging on your chest like a gorilla about to throw some faeces. Alright, you still don’t get it do you? Hit the play button, lock your windows and doors, and hide all your good jewellery. This is so good it could sedate you for a few hours.
