"13th Hour"
Synthpop

Songwriting, like God intended

Did you ever hear the story about the dog that never crossed the road? Of course you didn’t, there is no such tale and there probably never will be. Oh wait, there will, in fact be one – this one you are about to read now.

There was a cute little puppy who was always told to look left and right before crossing the road, however, it was never told that it couldn’t do both at the same time (😊 SMH). Can you tell where this is going? Yep, you guessed right, nowhere right? On its first day out on its own, it stood at the side of the road waiting for the perfect time but the perfect time never came, because there was no way of determining when the time was perfect. The moral of the story is that you’ve got to be specific! As specific as that last safety wipe of your caboose before hitting the flush button after doing that thing you do immediately after your morning coffee or your Captain Crunch cereal for all you weird cereal junkies out there. As specific as a bomb defuser’s wire cutter. As specific as Drake’s hairline before he claimed Covid destroyed it (WTF, Covid is being blamed for EVERYTHING!). If you are wondering what all this talk about being specific is all about then you have probably never been here before (newbie, SMH 😆). If you have been here before you’d probably already know by now that what you reading is just the product of an excited mind under the influence of some really compelling sonic vibrations and that what you are about to listen to could in fact be the OPPOSITE of specific – because we’re so edgy here like that. You know, like when we say “bad” we mean “good”, and when we say “sick” no one’s vomiting. Was going to add that when we talk about chains and whips no one is picking cotton but it seemed a little racist, so won’t say that.

But back to this awesome track.

“13th Hour” is the title track of San Francisco, US composer turned singer Megan McDuffee’s new album.  She has been blowing the socks of electronic music fans for a few years now and is on a steady rise to superstardom while still managing to excel more so than ever before in the world of video game and film music composing. It’s a song that, like a maze, will take you to a very special mysterious place that you’ll never want to escape from, but couldn’t if you tried. And no, hitting the pause or stop button on Spotify won’t help you. It’s one of those songs that just echoes in your ears gently forever. It's one of those peculiar records that won’t necessarily hit your sweet spot immediately but it will do things you like and touch you in places that make you feel so good (musically obviously). It's classical music meets trance and dance, with a groove that will make you move and vocal whispers that will make you shiver. Why haven’t you hit the play button yet? You’re still thinking about the word "specific" aren’t you? Okay let’s talk about it a little bit more. Nowadays, it’s quite rare for songs to be specific. When was the last time you heard a song that made sense all the way through? It was about one thing, and one thing only; and all the way through, everything revolved around that one thing. Listen to any new song and you’ll get an idea of what is being said here. One disgruntled old school music fan said "listening to today's music is like being cornered by Prince in a dark alley and tickled with a soft white feather frantically from head to toe in a bid to find your sweetest spot". Talk about a nightmare right? That's so scary. Imaging if Prince was also wearing those infamous white pants that had the butt cheeks cut out and he was jiggling his butt cheeks while doing it? He-he-he. Just to be clear, he was a straight male.

Songs are rarely about anything now, they say they are about something and the next thing you know they have drifted off and are talking about something else, kind of like the way I write, but not cool and exciting like I do it 😊. I totally understood where he was coming from. Sometimes I want to hear a song about love that is ONLY about love, and that doesn’t drift off to talk about the people that hate every other verse, or about eating boogina (yep, that's a word, but don't Google it). So I guess this review was a little selfish. Sorry, there's too much about me in here. At least you get a really good and  specific song out of it – a song about love and longing, and getting lost in a maze of desire with the apple of your eye. It’s really “specific” all the way through. Enjoy! “Chef’s kiss”.

Listen at your own risk

Video game music record label, music publisher and rights administrator, Materia Collective recently released “Buddies”, a two disc project celebrating the soundtrack to the video game series, Banjo-Kazooie. Among the 18 tracks that make up the exciting album is this one, a tribute to the game by freelance California, US video game composer and recording artist, Megan McDuffee. This haunting, deceptively lowkey, mesmerising and mildly ominous record will seduce you into its dark ambience, bedazzle you with sweet synths, put you under a blissful spell and string you along with ever so inviting words till you feel woozy and weak at the knees. And then, as the title suggests, though sadly you failed to pay it any mind right at the start, it will take your soul. Don’t worry you can have your soul back, just play the record in reverse and the spell will be broken.

Inside your fantasies

Drifting and ethereal

Will give you chills

So ‘90s yet ever so futuristic, as is the case with most if not all Megan McDuffee’s songs. This one's a collaboration with independent synthwave music producer, Mister The Kid.

Take a side step from reality and throw your hair around like it’s 1999. Feel-good vibe with a very European feel. The good thing about records like this is they never get old. They don’t necessarily set trends yet they excel without following any at all. It’s almost as if the song takes you to a quiet place and whispers sweet nothings into you ears. It has a very intimate, one on one feel that reeks of desire and fantasy in equal proportions. Don't worry, it’s not pushy or clingy – it won’t buy you a drink and then follow you around the club all night, but it’ll flirt with you from afar and lure you closer and closer till you surrender yourself and let go completely.

So hot

This one’s for all the rapidly growing crowd of insatiable fans under a very heavy spell cast by a lady who knows her way around the music scales like Stevie Wonder on crack - okay maybe not crack, just on a really good day. Classically trained and more resourceful than ghetto mice, Megan McDuffee has shown the world what happens when education, passion and immense talent come together – and it’s really alluring. Sure, we all thought we had probably seen or heard it before in some form or the other, but when Megan made her debut she made it look so easy, selling out every record before its official release date and eventually topping Bandcamp’s Best Sellers list. Megan has hardly gone a month or two without releasing a solo or collaborative project, so her repertoire has grown pretty quickly. “Synth Siren” is a playlist that was created to help fans keep up. It features every single one of her records as well as records she has featured on, and is updated with every new release.

Immaculate!
Dark, sexy, futuristic and old school with massive soundscapes that’ll swallow you whole and polish you off till all that bad pop music you’ve had to resort to listening to over the past decade has been washed away and you are squeaky clean. Immaculately produced; it’s big, full and almost solid – one of those records that will, as it were, box you in and never let you leave until you feel really good. It’s commanding, deeply immersive and powerful. Megan McDuffee’s 3 track cover EP was released to critical acclaim just before Christmas 2019 and is poised to be a 2020 hit.

So retro

Gone are the days when it seemed like all you needed to become a world-class music star was a voice angels would kill for, a whole lot of talent, a spectacular record, a drug habbit fans would only find out about many years later, really big hair and a leather jacket with too many zips. It takes a lot more to entertain the new generation of music fans, and by the sound of what's coming out nowadays they don't even care that much about talent, but you need a whole lot of drugs to enjoy it - at least so we've heard (we only do drugs when we're sick and tired here). To entertain today's average music fan you must first jump off a bridge and land on a freshly peeled banana - if you are a lady, take at least one more bullets than 50 Cent did (10 or more) - if you are a dude, and then do more drugs than Bobby and Whitney. And that's just phase one baby, next you'll have to pierce everything on your body, leave no skin untatted and get more silicone in you than Kim Kardashian's butt alone, one way or the other. And no, not in a fun way.

But whatever happened to just good old plain good music? Well, let's find out. This song is from Canadian retrowave music producer, Moonrunner83's critically acclaimed 2018 album, "Streets". It features award-winning video game and film composer turned solo artist, Megan McDuffee from Los Angeles, USA, who has spent the last year reminding music fans what the voice of an angel sounds like and how good music makes you feel deep down inside. If you like old school electro, this track will take you to a special place where the future and the past meet, and it's not the present. But enough talk, let's do some drugs and get right down to it shall we. Oh wait, we're not doing that.

Space travel - get onboard

If you've never been to space, this is what it feels and sounds like. Released on the 8th of July, "Thief" is the latest release by the amazing Megan McDuffee, who has made it very clear that this is her year after more back to back critically acclaimed releases than one can count on both hands in what seems like less than the time it would take to do so if it were at all possible. This track is so good it will be over before you can even comprehend how good it is. It's crisp, lush, wavy, spacey, and as has been the case with most of her releases, it will take you away to a special place you'll never want to return from; it's futuristic with a '90s electronica vibe; and the vocals are so sweet, tender and deeply touching you'll feel like you sat on Mother Teresa's pinkie.

Good music takes you places

Prepare for multiple eargasms

This highly anticipated and subsequently critically acclaimed 11 track masterpiece by San Francisco, US artist, Megan McDuffee and Alberta, Canada electronic music producer, Moonrunner83 was released on the 27th of May and still has even the most discerning synthpop circles around the world in shock and fearing for their speakers. If you've ever been in love or are presently in love then this album will feel and sound very familiar to you and will resonate with you on so many levels you'll feel like you're cheating. It's adventurous and exhilarating in ways words can't even begin to describe. It'll take you places in your fantasies you never even knew existed or possibly didn't exist until the point you hit the play button. It'll whisk you away to the past and catapult you to the future. It'll recall all your fondest memories and then smash them into your wildest dreams. It'll lasso the moon for you, put you on a pedestal and then pummel your ears with a plethora of masterfully blended artificial and organic sounds so heartwarming and invigorating you'll get chills.

Spectacular!

The official music video for "The Streets" was released on the 27th of May. The track was originally released back in 2018 when renowned San Francisco, US freelance music composer, Megan McDuffee stepped out from behind the scenes and found her voice. It's been pandemonium in the world of synthpop ever since. A new version of the record, "The Streets - Director's Cut" was released on the same day as the video. If you are the kind of music fan who likes music that takes you places, music that tells a story and music that makes you feel deeply, then this one's for you - in fact it'll be years before you even think about taking it off your pedestal. It is a music video that will set your bar for music videos so high you'll never watch MTV again. It will whisk you away to the future and do things to you creatively that'll make your toes curl. It's deeply exciting, excruciatingly satisfying and you'll probably watch it over and over again several times before you realize you're doing it too much.

If you into sci-fi, fantasy and superhero movies, watching this would be like sticking your willy in a light socket for the ultimate rush and then getting your brains splatted everywhere in ecstasy.

To the Batmobile!

Retro sounds from the '90s meet space age sounds from the future. Yet another Megan McDuffee collaboration that is causing pandemonium in the world of retro wave and synthpop, and driving electronic music fans absolutely nuts. This one is with Minsk, Belarus music producer, Fury Weekend. Pacey and thrilling from start to finish, this lush and elegant electronic music masterpiece has all the makings of a superhero movie soundtrack - it's the type of music that ushers in the supervillain for the final battle scene, and the perfect closing song for when the hero inevitably wins, and then says something really cocky to seal the victory. It has one of the longest intros of any song this decade, but after just over a minute of utterly electrifying aural healing, Megan McDuffee steps in to take what has already become the ultimate musical rush to the next level. The only thing that could possibly ensue is a painfully satisfying eargasm that will whisk you away to year 3000 for a body transplant to help you move accordingly.

Retro chic extraordinaire

Think space age Abba

This is what it feels like when you leave cloud 9 behind and reach for the stars

Only a few months ago when critically acclaimed independent San Francisco, US music composer, Megan McDuffee stepped out from behind the scenes making movie, television and video game soundtracks and scores and found her voice, this was one of her very first records - a sensational collaboration with UK synthwave music producer, Alex from Edinburgh. The track was such a massive hit with indie electronic music fans that it sold out on tape, vinyl and CD weeks before it was officially released on Bandcamp. Excruciatingly satisfying from start to finish, it will take you back to the '80s and then whisk you away into outer space and stop time just for you. It's one of those tracks with the uncanny ability to make you feel special, like you are the only one in the world once you hit the play button. It's lush, elegant, artificially blissful, intoxicating and it will brighten up your day every single time. To cut a long story short - it's the stuff dreams are made of.

Retro chic.

If you take your synths seriously and like to have them just right so they hit your sweet spots every single time then this album should be an absolute treat for you. San Francisco, US composer and classically-trained singer, Megan McDuffee has been making a lot of noise in the world of electronic music recently. With her latest release, "Hero", a collaborative music project with UK electronic music artist, Alex still riding high on Bandcamp's Synthpop bestseller charts, she has wasted no time in releasing her next. "Streets" is another collaborative music project, this time with Moonrunner83, a synth enthusiast from Calagary in Canada with a retro-inspired sound. The album is currently available to pre-order and if it follows in the footsteps of "Hero" pre-orders will probably be sold out soon, so get it while you can.
