"Cryptocurrency"
Reggae

Put your money where your mouth is.

After less than a month, as the case has been since the start of his illustrious independent music career over a decade ago, the king of Miami, Florida’s independent reggae music scene, and one of the Southeast’s hardest working reggae musicians by any standards returned to the spotlight with a hot new record back in February. Needless to say, the track was right on the money (get it?) and “Cryptocurrency” is still spinning out of control on some the region’s most highly respected turntables.

So what can one expect from what has been called  one of the most relevant reggae tracks of all time? Well, Everything! of course. Danceable, tropical, sensible in terms of lyrical content, but most importantly contextually, it touches on one of the most important changes mankind has faced since the Barter economies, which date as far back as 6000 BC, when people exchanged goods and services for, well, other goods and services. Would it be sexist to think women were probably the richest people on the planet then, or would that just be filthy? Okay let’s not say then, moving on… In case you were wondering, that was where the tagline of this review “put your money where your mouth is” came from, one of the filthy, filthy minds around here. To cut a long story short, this is one of those songs you play on the way to the bank with a pocket full of money or on the way back from the bank, with a pocket full of money of course. Oh wait, no one even goes to the bank anymore – so, play this when you open up your mobile banking app or your digital currency account or whatever money thingies you use to look at the manifestations of your hard (or not so hard) work. Once the Afro rhythms and the warm, feelgood vibes have embedded themselves deeply in your very essence, the only word coming out of your mouth would be that typical of an African left speechless in the most extreme of moments of wonderment, disbelief or enjoyment – Chai!!

Honorebel, Herbert Skillz
"Jealousy"
Reggae

A collaborative record with one of Uganda’s top music producers, Herbert Skillz; Honorebel’s single, “Jealousy” was just one of several notable singles that did well to keep fans happy ahead of the release of his highly anticipated and long overdue album at the time, “Above The Noise”, which was released just over 4 months after to critical acclaim. The track was not featured on the album but was celebrated for several reasons including the mere fact that it had become quite rare to hear Honorebel on vocals for a whole song at the time, owing to a long series of high profile collaborative records that shaped his career and cemented his name in the history books as one of the hardest working and most successful independent reggae artists in Miami. The song gave fans a sizeable intrinsic doze of the emerging Kingston, Jamaica native's infectious performance style and unmatched songwriting skills in all their glories for 4 whole minutes. Paired with the expertise of Herbert Skillz, it didn’t stand a chance of not becoming a summer hit.

This week, Honorebel confirmed that the music video for this record, one of the highlights of his spectacular autumn 2019 album, “Above The Noise” has gone into production and is due out soon. Featuring international American hip hop recording artist, Rick Ross and international Jamaican reggae recording artist, Wayne Wonder, coupled with the tropical feel-good sounds of the critically acclaimed independent Miami reggae star, it’s a record that has all the makings of a summer hit, and it has done well to remain on the playlists of top radio stations and DJs over 10 months after its release.

Independent UK reggae music sensation, Juliette Ashby released her latest single, “Something For You” on the 10th of April, just over 2 months since her latest EP, “Freedom” took the Capital’s reggae scene by storm back in February. Her sound, a lush blend of R&B and Caribbean music, has done well to set her apart as one of London’s top new reggae artists to watch, and with every new record fans are reminded why she deserved a spot on Billboard’s “Next Big Sound” chart very early in her career and has been closely watched by the music industry’s top players and critics since. The new single is a collaborative record with popular Brazilian artist, MC Cabelinho, who she worked with back in October 2019 on the single, “Body On Me”.

"One Man Alone"
Reggae

Lust at first sight

Honorebel is one of those artists that can do no wrong in the eyes or ears of his fans. He’s never released a bad song, and as far as anyone is concerned it’s almost impossible. Even the toughest reggae music critics find it hard to find anything bad to say about his records and this one is no different. Released back in the summer of 2019, “One Man Alone” came at a time when the buzz for the Miami reggae sensation’s forthcoming album, “Above The Noise” was at an all-time high with no release date set. It did well to tide fans over and put a lot of despairing minds at ease. It wasn’t featured on the album.

This song will take you way back to the days of Musical Youth’s “Pass The Dutchie” and Bob Marley’s “Jamming”. If you haven’t heard either of those songs please stop everything you are doing now and catch up.

“One Man Alone” is a feel-good reggae record. Anyone who knows anything about reggae knows what to expect after reading that – a feel-good migraine of course. Reggae is already known for its feel-good vibe in general, hence, any record that is described as a feel-good reggae record will probably put you to sleep and infuse you with so much love you’ll find a mirror and kiss yourself several time when you awaken. It’s a song about lust at first sight, or maybe love - we don't know the difference anymore, Millennials ruined everything.

Survivors' anthem

Here’s a Coronavirus song to add to your collection. There have been so many created over the past week alone, but this one really hit the spot with reggae fans and Caribbean music lovers. It’s a reggae remix of the popular 1977 song “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees, which has been remixed by several musical acts over the years including Wyclef Jean whose single “We Trying To Stay Alive” peaked at number 14 on Billboard in 1997. Honorebel’s version of the track showcases everything fans have grown to love about the independent Jamaica born Miami based star in flying colors. It’s got a very raw and hungry vibe.

Classic

Featuring a host of world renowned artists including Rick Ross, Wayne Wonder, Shaggy, Sound Sultan and Charly Black, "Above The Noise" is an outstanding feel-good album with 16 masterfully orchestrated tracks that will stick with you for a very long time. The latest album by Miami, US independent reggae star, Honorebel, it has been a long time in the making and it did well to not only meet the expectations of fans but also defy them spectacularly.

As far as highlights and songs to listen out for, there isn't just one or a few. This album will blow you away right from the very first track and then do it over and over to a higher degree each time till you are completely out of breath from jumping, air humping and air spanking - every single track is a highlight. It’s one of those rare albums that instantaneously transforms your mood and takes you to a happy place where the wine is flowing, the girls are winding and the vibes are positive.

You'll never have a dull day again with this album in your music player.

You can do it!

2020 seems like the year when all the world’s sewage is bound to surface. As in the old African saying, “ your shit came up today” (translated); all the dark secrets and BSes the world - including you (yes, you) and I, has been hiding is bound to surface for everyone to see. Technology has become so advanced that scientists now have time to kick back and drink fine wine in space – whose brilliant idea was that? Was that Einstein’s dream? Everyone knows you don’t catch a buzz in space, that’s a recipe for disaster if nothing else at all. Even Snoop Dogg is probably shaking his head somewhere and thinking how bad an idea it is, but let’s wait and see. Be sure to carry an umbrella every single day because there could be burnt out body parts raining down from space any time soon, or weeks old piss from drunk astronauts urinating on the world from the International Space Station.

But where were we? Songs tend to get worse with every passing generation – it seems to be a trend that has existed probably since the very first song, “Hurrian Hymn No. 6” was written over 3400 years ago in the place we now know as Southern Iraq. With so many new artists, possibly a record number, so many new songs all seemingly created in a hurry from the sound of them, and so little money to go around in the struggling mainstream music industry, it’s safe to say 2019 was a very “trendy” year in music – or are we listening to the wrong mainstream radio stations?

The new generation of music fans have been so unfortunate, to say the very least. They heard some of the worst songs the music industry has ever had to offer. But it hasn’t been all bad, they’ve been seduced with other perks along the way – for example, they’re the first generation of music fans that can safely say they've seen more camel toes than Jesus - just from watching MTV alone every now and again. If that’s not enough for the 13 to 17 year olds that seem to be the main target audience for most of the new mainstream records that were released over the past year alone, then what is? But again, where were we? Technology has become so advanced that in no time everyone’s secrets will be out on the Internet for everyone else to see. We'll all be celebrities in our own rights, and we’ll no longer need to worship musicians and actors, emulate them, or judge ourselves or our peers based on what the Kardashians look like or are doing. We’ll all be free to be ourselves. So if you haven’t chosen your anthem for 2020 yet, let this be it – “Be Free”.

Released during the later part of last year, the record has a feel good vibe like no other record that has been released this decade and is one of few songs with mainstream appeal that didn't follow in the aforementioned downward trend, in fact the track set a new high for feel-good reggae music as we know it.

Happy New Year! And may 2020 bring you all your heart desires, and then some more.

"Ghetto Christmas"
Reggae

Who's that farting in the chimney?

No one in their right mind wants to be caught climbing into a chimney of anyone's house late at night in anywhere they don't cut the heads off chickens before eating them. Even with a flying slay and magic elves to make the trip as smooth and noiseless as possible, it's a risk no one is willing to take, so of course you'll never find Santa Clause in the ghetto, it's too dangerous.

Whether you are into pop, rock, electronica, hip hop or country; jazz, folk, classical, reggae, blues or R&B, there is always room for a new Christmas song even if just for the sake of sanity. Here's an exciting reggae record to add a little festive cheer to your rugged, hardcore reggae and dancehall music collections. It explores what Christmas is like in the Ghetto. It was released to critical acclaim by Miami, US reggae sensation, Honorebel last Christmas and it is poised to be a holiday season hit once again this year. It's super chilled, mid-tempo with a steady groove and softly sung lyrics, and it is very danceable with a tropical vibe that's guaranteed to get some Christmas jumpers coming off in no time - but get the mistletoes first.

Jaw dropper!

Reggae is a genre of music that holds a special place in every single one of our hearts, whether we know it or not. It’s one of those genres with that uncanny ability to make a listener instantaneously drop everything they are doing and just sprawl. In the words of the great Bob Marley, “when it hits you, you feel no pain” - no one really knows if Bob was talking about music, or if he had in fact just discovered a brand new strain of really strong Marijuana, but it rings true for reggae music every single time. Pop is amazing and rock is too, but nothing numbs pain and will make you float away to a happy place far far away like a reggae song. “Above The Noise” is the brand new album by independent reggae sensation, Honorebel. Originally from Jamaica, he is based in Miami, USA, and his sound is a fusion of the sounds of both regions – a smooth, infectious blend of the bright, exotic, liberating sounds that have all the makings of a party starter. He’s made tracks with some of the world’s greatest artists so there’s no doubt everyone had really high expectations for this album, which was over 3 years in the making; and he defied every single one of them and still has critics lost for words since its release on the 8th of November. The 16 track star-studded album features Rick Ross, Shabba Ranks and a host of other top international urban music artists, and includes the hit singles "Sauce Boss", which was released a few months back, "Your Love", "Lots Of Love" and "Own The Night". If you’ve been looking for an album that turns any given day into a Sunday, then you are in for a treat. Sure, it’s packed with party records and yes, it's perfect for getting the party started on a Saturday night too, but it’s also got that extra bit of “aaah” – that blissful sigh of relief you only get on a Sunday morning. Enjoy!

The world as it is

This loud, furious full-bodied record by Melbourne reggae band, Echo Drama attempts to recreate the madness and chaos going on around the world today - and it does so perfectly. It varies vastly in terms of performance styles - from machine gun rap flows and wild rock 'n' roll style instrumentation to slow singing, hip hop drums, short bursts of soul and graceful harmonies, sometimes all at the same time. Too many caliente!
Only a Mexican can put how much heat this track packs into words. It will have the ground shaking all around you.

Brexit, Trump, May, Putin, "Rocket Man", "Cougar Lover", ISIS, recessions, mass liquidations, job losses, police brutality, racism, scandals, sex maniacs, sloppy assassinations - it seems like nothing else could possibly go wrong in the world today, but unfortunately our favorite MTV and BET artists seem to be having too much fun to acknowledge any of it. The latter alone is enough to get the average adult to break out the good liquor at the weekend when all the endless news stories on TV and in the newspapers come to a climax while paying bills that make hard earned money look like chicken change. So for the sake of sanity, here's a little song that should put fire in your belly and help you hit the ground running on Monday morning having achieved a pristine state of clarity from syncing yourself with the realities of the real world as every one of us has the displeasure of experiencing it every Sunday morning when the clubs close, the liquor wears off and we're hungry enough to eat up everything in the house. This is one those those tracks that never gets old. It was relevant over 5 years ago when it was released and it will probably be relevant for many years to come. It addresses various social and political issues we have faced in the world for years and paints a picture of what it could be like while also exploring what it should be like. Hopefully you didn't drink too much last night trying to wrap your head around all the madness going on in the world around us, but if you did, have a wonderful hangover - and don't do it again.
